1997 to 2000 - Research of Haulover History June of 2000 - Met with Haulover Beach Park Manager Sept. of 2000 - Conferences to enlist support with Miami-Dade Parks Department, Historical Museum of Southern Florida, County Manager (M.R. Stierheim) and Michael Spring of Department of Cultural Affairs October to April 2001 - Letters of support sought for project April 11, 2001 - First application turned into State of Florida Historical Marker Committee August 9, 2001 - Application refused September 18, 2001 - Second application submitted November 8, 2001 - Second application approved November 16, 2001 - Request made to Miami-Dade Parks Department to pay for entire marker instead of making application for grant to State December 3, 2001 - Parks Department agrees to pay for marker in full January 28, 2002 - Final copy signed to verify spacing on marker January 28, 2002 - Maimi-Dade Parks Department seeking a vendor to produce the Marker May 23, 2002 - Miami Dade Parks Department still trying to move order for marker through procurement division June 27, 2002 - Miami Dade Parks Department orders historical marker July 16, 2002 - Meeting with Miami Dade Parks Department to discuss dedication of marker - more plans to be made when marker arrives December 23, 2002 - Still awaiting marker February 22, 2003 - Still no word on arrival of historical marker February 28, 2003 - Florida State Historical Division states the marker is ready for shipment to the Miami - Dade Parks and Recreation Department March 2003 No word on arrival of Marker April 20, 2003 No word on arrival of Marker May 2003 No word on arrival of Marker June 2003 No word on arrival of Marker July 14, 2003 Marker has arrived at Parks Department July 14, 2003 Notification by Parks Department of their desire to have the dedication of the marker together with the ground breaking ceremony for the start of construction on the New Marina at Haulover August, 2003 No Word September 2003 No Word October 6, 2003 Request to Parks Department to send e-mail pictures of marker in their possession October 9, 2003 E-mail pictures of marker in Parks Department Warehouse in Miami received today. Assured follow up for a marker dedication date would be next week November 9, 2003 - NO FOLLOW UP WITH DEDICATION TO DATE December 9, 2003 NO FOLLOW UP WITH DEDICATION TO DATE January 8, 2004 Dual dedication date set by Parks Department for Historical Marker and breaking of ground for new marina on February 21, 2004 (Saturday) at 10:30 a.m. EVERYONE IS INVITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! January 9 to January 15, 2004 - Confirmation that the Ft. Lauderdale United States Coast Guard Station, Dania, will bring a Color Guard to open the dedication and present the Pledge of Allegiance. They will also provide a 41 foot United States Coast Guard Utility Boat to stand off shore from the dock during the ceremony January 9 to January 15, 2004 Confirmation that Father Scott O`Brien, the Barry University Chaplain (Miami Shores, Fl.) will present the Invocation and the Benediction January 9 to January 20, 2004 - 81 members of First Captain families have confirmed they will be present at the dedication January 16, 2004 The following will attend: Captain George Helker, an original dock captain; Marjorie Caraway Terry and Iris Nemire, two of the original four women mates at the original dock February 1, 2004 Confirmation Whitney Weber of Miami will sing the Star Spangled Banner February 2, 2004 Invitations will be printed this week
February 4, 2004 Due to the large crowd expected for the Historical Marker Dedication, it will be separate from the New Marina Ground Breaking. The schedule will be: Historical Marker 10:30 12:00 and New Marina Ground Breaking 1:00 2005 - Present: Currently working on completing a book of the Historic Haulover area, to be published in the near future.
